Let Us Prey

Writer: Glen SmithGlen Smith

A little after my last Blog entry (and once again, I find myself feeling somewhat apologetic for the time it's taken me to write this), I took myself off for a decent walk, loaded up with camera gear. As is often the case, the views I expected to make good images didn't pan out, but I did manage to bag this one of a Buzzard.

Now those that know me, will know that I love birds of prey! I have early memories of seeing kestrels 'flutter' and being fascinated, and the main reason for buy my Tamron 150-600 G2 lens a couple of years ago, was to try to bag myself a sea or golden eagle off the Isle of Mull. The only slight problem with that, is that even with a small telescope attached to your camera(!), good shots in the wild are extremely difficult. Not only have you got to find an obliging specimen in the first place, but generally good photos of wildlife are taken at eye level with the subject, and that's pretty tricky! So you end to be taking photos upwards towards the birds, and that silhouettes them against the sky, all but removing all sense of colour or pattern. And that's where a bit of technique and 'post production' (editing) comes in. I didn't manage to get any decent shots of the eagles, and I've not yet got a good one of a kestrel, but with the result of this latest one I hope I'm heading in the right direction.

For now I'll keep preying....
